A career in finance can be a fun one for those who enjoy working with money and don't mind staring at numbers all day every day. What does a financial officer/manager do? It's pretty simple. All companies spend money at some point or another, and they need a department to manage their finances and make sure that everything is being spent properly. They also need to ensure that the budget is balanced and that they have enough money to spend on certain projects.

For example, if a company needs something for a project, like a new computer, or some kind of advertising campaign, then they will have to run it by the financial department to make sure that there are enough funds available. If there are not, then they will have to deal with the repercussions. Repercussions may involve that particular department getting extremely angry.

There are a few different departments as far as financial careers go, and you'll find that most companies feature all of them. If they are a small company though, they may only have one or two people working in the financial department. Bigger companies have bigger needs however, so the following departments are usually established:

Cash Managers: These are the people who monitor cash flow within a company. They also check to see if a loan needs to be taken out, or if the company is able to expend the money to buy excess equipment. All the money in the company flow through this department and if you are working in this area then you have a lot of responsibilities.

Risk Insurance Managers: These are people that oversee the different programs to make sure that the company losses as little as possible, and that the risk is as low as possible during any type of financial transaction or negotiation.

Financial Planner: Exactly what it sounds like, you'll be in charge of planning for the company's financial future. Projecting the long term goals of a company is very important and as such you'll be tasked with a huge responsibility.

Aside from all these, you could take a completely different path. With a career in finance you could become a private consultant especially if you're a financial planner with adequate experience. You could always plan out the future of an entire family for a fee, planning from a child's birth, all the way to their college education. There's a lot of money in this industry, and this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Don't think that this will be easy though. You'll have to go through a lot of schooling before you even get close to this type of career. You're going to have to obtain a bachelor's degree in the fields of economics, finance, business administration, and that is just the minimum for obtaining a job in this field. Some employers may seek someone who has a Master's degree, and even more important is experience. You may be able to obtain an apprenticeship in this field, and if you can then all the better. Employers look for those who have experience, and this is very important to them. If you can get experience then do it, and enjoy your long and fruitful career in the finance industry.
