What is the role

Purpose and Accountabilities:

Commercial Operations is currently seeking a Commercial Operator, to join our Commercial Operations Distillates, GTL and Baseoil/Wax Team. This team is responsible for managing Shell’s domestic and international movements of Distillates, GTL, Baseoil and Wax for the Distillates Trade Book.

Commercial Operators are primarily accountable for coordinating all aspects of the operational execution of a trading deal and optimizing overall profitability through commercial acumen and flawless operational execution. Operator activities include, but are not limited to:


Schedule physical movements including pipeline, barges, and tankers with refineries, terminals and third party customers. This entails coordinating, mutual scheduling requirements, and ensuring proper documentation is handled amongst our internal/external customers.
Ensures that all obligations arising from the oil contracts and/or charter parties are carried out.
Analyze risks and opportunities, and present proposals to key stakeholders.
Responsible for cargo operations, both domestic and international, adhering to Jones Act restrictions and Import / Export requirements.
Responsible for managing product quality parameters/specifications to maximize profitability.
Coordinate product blends to meet contractual specifications for daily updating/ monthly reconciling of inventory at our terminals and adhering to end of month processes.
Ensure all contractual obligations, agreements, and requirements are complied with.
Interact with oil and freight counter-parties in regards to post-deal activities and ensure documentary requirements are met.
Ensure all data pertaining to scheduling, customs, claims/demurrage are accurately recorded in Trading systems in a timely manner to enable efficient handling by the relevant service departments.
Keep adequate records to meet the company’s legal and fiscal obligations.
Effectively communicate with traders, schedulers, and other team members to develop logistical solutions to meet commercial excellence.
Apply commercial aptitude to gain stronger understanding of the business dynamics and provide logistical value. Build & maintain effective relationships with internal & external counterparties


HSSE / Compliance / Product Quality:


Responsible to ensure safe, compliant, and efficient execution of all movements within operational remit.
Responsible to ensure compliance with all HSSE control frameworks, examples of which are the OSP Assurance and the Shell Marine Vetting process.
Responsible to ensure compliance with all import/export and customs requirements as applicable.
Responsible to ensure compliance with all product quality standards and requirements for product to meet EPA regulations and specifications.


Dimensions:

The team is responsible for managing the logistics (truck, rail, pipeline, marine, and terminals) and inventory for Distillate, GTL, Baseoil and Wax movements. The Commercial Operator is expected to “own the molecule” and understand the operations and commercial implications of their desk. The role will be part of a larger Operations team within the Commercial Operations organization, supporting Shell Trading in a dynamic, fast paced, business-critical trading environment. As this is an operational role, the candidate will be on call 24/7 and has the potential to require a significant degree of off-hours support. Accessibility via phone is required at all times. This position has operational pressure and working stress, which the successful candidate should be aware of in terms of a dimension.

What we need from you


Must have legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Supply Chain or Engineering or Trading Operations
Trading operations, or equivalent role for at least 3 years
3 or more years scheduling experience, Colonial Origin scheduling experience preferred.
Blending experience in operations, or similar process is advantageous.


The added complexity of the role will require the following skillsets:


Ability to think on feet, and make decisions without having complete information/knowledge
Managing many commercial stakeholders, and being able to adapt to needs of that stakeholder and desk
Resilient under pressure, managing a challenging workload and multiple priorities/demands
Ability to work, and learn autonomously with minimal supervision
Highly effective planning & organizational skills are essential.
Highly motivated and possess strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting skills to recognize and solve problems quickly.
Strong commercial acumen to recognize the operational areas of potential value creation, or loss, of a trading deal, and the ability to identify new opportunities.
Advanced Excel skills
Knowledge of Endur, Qlikview and Salesforce.com
Team player and high inter-personal skills capable of developing and maintaining strong internal, external and virtual relationships.
Perform the daily task of quantifying and analyzing discrepancies between the plan, schedules and actual performance. Analyze and communicate results to the responsible parties to take necessary corrective actions. Escalate issues when need be.
Lead or support the month end process for reporting deal volumes and inventories in ETRM system.
Provide backup coverage for other schedulers
