General Description
The Accounting Manager leads the accounting functions and supervises the accounting staff that is responsible for all daily accounting operations including: general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management and purchasing.
Responsibilities
Lead all general accounting functions, ensuring adherence to and compliance with all applicable generally accepted accounting practices and regulatory standards, including both Massachusetts and federal law.
Oversee the general accounting cycle, ensure the accurate and timely processing of accounts payable, accounts receivable, purchase orders, expense reports, journal entries, and cash management and control activities.
Maintain the General Ledger including ensuring expenses are charged to the appropriate cost centers and projects. Set up new General Ledger sub accounts for project costing purposes.
Participate in the financial planning process for the annual budget and periodic forecasting, leading the budgeting process for Corporate Departments.
Communicate monthly fiscal results and budget variance analysis to program managers, cost center managers and senior management in a timely and productive manner with standardized reports and analysis.
Participate in the coordination of financial statements and supporting materials for distribution and presentation to MassTech Executive staff and the Finance and Operations Committee of the Board of Directors.
Communicate and coordinate accounting policies, practices, and procedures within the department and to company managers and officials, vendors, reporting agencies, clients, customers and the public and assist with training staff as needed.
Act as the liaison between staff and auditors and lead in the preparation of external audit materials including the preparation of audit schedules, supporting documentation and other related financial information.
Create and maintain complex spreadsheets, graphs and other financial documentation in support of the Corporation’s financial position.
Lead the accounting team through hands on management; mentor and develop staff.
Establish, maintain, and monitor compliance with MassTech’s accounting, operating, and internal control policies and procedures.
Develop and implement appropriate and more efficient methods or processes, identify work flow improvements, and identify and incorporate new or revised accounting and procedural controls.
Assist with coordination and oversight of grants as it relates to compliance and fiscal requirements
Assist Controller and Chief Financial Officer in the evaluation, refinement and communication of work methodologies, best practices, and operational procedures.
Represent the finance group in internal meetings and on working groups to facilitate the interaction between organizational divisions and to ensure financial and operational objectives are addressed.
Perform additional tasks as may be assigned from time to time by the Controller and the Chief Financial Officer.
Requirements
1. Education
Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university in Accounting required.
Masters in finance or Business Administration preferred.
2. Experience
5 years experience in general accounting and or public accounting with automated financial systems, budget management and spreadsheet modeling.
3-5 years in a lead role supervising accounting staff.
3. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
Excellent analytical, mathematical and quantitative skills.
Excellent Excel and financial modeling skills.
Excellent PC skills and knowledge of PC applications, e.g., Excel, Word, databases, E-mail, Internet and payroll and accounting software applications.
Demonstrated knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) accounting standards and Massachusetts statutes relative to accounting for public instrumentalities.
Demonstrated experience in leading all aspects of accounting, financial reporting and analysis.
Demonstrated ability to develop budgets and analyze budget variances.
Demonstrated ability to work under pressure with multiple projects and deadlines.
Demonstrated leadership ability to motivate and develop staff..
Demonstrated ability to define and document business problems and develop solutions.
