Financial
Aid Specialist II
. The person assigned to this position will train and supervise one Financial Aid Specialist I. The candidate hired to this position will be responsible for administering the campus-based aid programs (Federal SEOG and Work-study) as well as various state aid programs, including state work-study and other employment programs. This position requires incumbent to develop a working knowledge of federal and state aid regulations and UM policies and procedures; able to learn and use Banner, COD, NSLDS, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint; and familiar with CyberBear, UM financial aid website, FAFSA.gov, and studentaid.gov to the degree of being able to assist a student with navigating through them.
Essential duties of the position include but are not limited to:
Oversee the hiring process, monitor funding levels throughout the year, contracting with off-campus agencies to employ UM students, growing the America Reads and America Counts programs, serve as liaison to departmental work-study supervisors and the Job Location and Development program in Career Services.
Perform quarterly reconciliation and annual reporting for these programs in both the federal and state systems.
Oversee the various emergency funds administered by the financial aid office, including the short term loan programs.
Evaluate files, which includes verification of applicant data, analyzing need, awarding or revising aid and using professional judgment to identify discrepant information and make adjustments in response to special circumstances.
Assist with general financial aid customer service.
Required Skills
Understand and effectively communicate complex policies to customers and staff.
Must be able to supervise.
Strong mathematic/accounting skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills and be able to have consistently positive interpersonal interactions with students, families, agency representatives, faculty and staff.
Maintain confidentiality.
Must be able to adjust quickly to changing job demands.
Must be comfortable using multiple software/database applications.
Must be able to be granted access to federal aid databases, meaning cannot be in default on any federal loans.
Minimum Required Experience
High School diploma and four (4) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and at least five (5) years of financial aid experience.
Knowledge of federal and state aid regulations.
