Job Description:

As an experienced team manager with extensive experience in investments in complex markets, you can make your mark by building Shell’s power business in East and Southern Africa. You will be part of Shell’s emerging markets power and energy access team in Shell’s Renewable & Energy Solutions and will contribute to providing reliable energy to 100 million people in emerging markets by 2030 through commercial investments in on-grid and off-grid power sector archetypes.

Where you fit in

Today, almost 800 million people globally have no electricity access, and 2 billion people depend on unreliable power supply. Emerging markets in Africa and Asia are experiencing rapid power demand growth driven by high population growth and large energy access and reliability gaps. Shell’s emerging markets power team is doing this through minority and majority investments in off-grid and on-grid power solutions, including solar home system and mini-grid companies, utility partnership, larger-scale generation projects and power solutions for commercial and industrial clients that help these customers to decarbonize their operations. The East African power markets are important to reduce Africa’ energy access gap and increase the reliability of power supply for residential and business customers. Shell’s energy access team is looking to leverage Shell’s presence in key countries and existing energy access portfolio investments to build an impactful power business in the region.

What’s the role?

We are looking for an experienced Head Investments for the emerging markets team with experience in power and energy access investments in East Africa and across the continent. We need a proven track record of developing scalable local and regional investment strategies; originating, leading, structuring and managing investments; navigating complex regulatory and operating environments; building strategic partnerships and managing high-level stakeholders across the public and private sector.

The Head Investments will be responsible for originating, executing, and managing Shell’s Emerging Markets Power business in East Africa and for accelerating progress towards Shell’s ambition to deliver reliable electricity to 100 million consumers in emerging markets by 2030. The Head Investments will:

Develop and deliver power sector investment strategies in the region along the entire power sector spectrum (utilities, generation, distribution, IPPs, C&I, mini-grids, off-grids, integrated power businesses) and across technologies (gas, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, storage etc.)
Be responsible for origination and deal delivery for new and follow-on portfolio investments, joint ventures and/or acquisitions (as applicable), across all aspects of origination, deal structuring, negotiation, due diligence through to deal completion
Drive the strategic development of new business models on integrated power supply and strategic platforms across markets and technologies, based on continuous market research and also leveraging Shell’s presence and expertise in the region
Initiate and manage external partnerships with a range of relevant public and private sector stakeholders, such as power sector regulators, rural electrification agencies, development finance institutions, utilities, project preparation facilities, project developers, commercial banks, institutional investors; and translate these partnerships into a series of concrete investment opportunities
Lead high level policy dialogues with regional authorities and national governments and regulators on power sector planning and the enabling framework for private sector investment in the power sector
Oversee and engage in governance and management of portfolio companies, joint ventures and/or acquisitions (as applicable), and act as director or shareholder representatives to support joint venture excellence and enhance value creation
Manage a growing dedicated team with about 5 professionals to originate and execute new investment opportunities, build strategic partnerships, and support the governance of existing portfolio companies
Oversee and manage Shell’s investment process in collaboration with all relevant internal teams across the Shell Group, including deal execution, portfolio governance, finance, legal, HSSE, country management et al.; liaise with corporate relations, investor relations, sustainability teams as needed
Develop and deliver the annual operational plan and budget for the region in line with the overall Energy Access business plan; including a substantial contribution towards meeting Shell’s energy access target of providing reliable access to energy to 100 million people in emerging markets
Represent the Shell Emerging Markets Power business with key external audiences and stakeholders in the respective region
Support business development across the continent as needed

What we need from you?

We are keen to hear from individuals with extensive experience in on-grid and/or off-grid power sector investments, including in Africa.
