Senior Indirect Tax Advisor

What’s the role?

As a Senior Indirect Tax Advisor, you will be responsible for the following duties:


Provide quality US Indirect Tax and US Customs and Duties advice and structuring in support of business objectives and priorities, focusing efforts in areas of highest complexity, risk and added value. Focus areas to include advice, structuring, shaping (legislation), and trade agreements
Serve as technical focal for US Federal Excise Tax, providing guidance and support to Shell businesses, as well as other Tax staff
Support Shell commercial/business teams responsible for day to-day Customs and Duties compliance activities by providing advice and support on tariff classification, valuation, origin determination, free trade agreement qualification, applicability of steel and China trade war tariffs, and admissibility-related issues and other customs-related topics as circumstances warrant
Optimize US Indirect Tax and Customs and Duties related cash-flows and maximize indirect tax added value for Shell business/functions operating in the US
Develop knowledge to ultimately support Shell Tax Compliance and Audit team(s) delivery of accurate tax reporting and defense, achieved through maintaining and building a one team mind set between advisors and compliance/audit personnel
Prioritization - exhibit behaviors and ways of working to embed flexibility as a sustainable approach to the rapid and agile deployment of resources to high risk/value priorities within and across Tax, in particular working together with other tax teams in the Americas region and globally
Support Shell’s “Powering Progress” strategy, including flexibly working through the energy transition to embrace learning around new businesses and taxes


What we need from you –


You must have legal authorization to work in the USA on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Minimum 7 years’ experience in US Indirect volume-based taxes working for a multinational or a professional firm as a US Indirect Tax advisor, with up-to-date knowledge of US tax law and practice
Minimum of bachelor’s degree, with a focus in finance, business, and/or accounting is required
Effective communicator of complex tax issues, both in writing and orally
Able to demonstrate imagination and creativity in the evaluation of issues and development of possible solutions
Experience commensurate with the requirements of the role: this is a senior individual contributor position, requiring strong technical skills. Specifically, deep working knowledge of US Indirect Federal and State motor fuel excise tax, with strong external relationships with fiscal authorities
