Shell Asset Management Company B.V. (SAMCo) in Rijswijk is the dedicated in-house asset manager for the Royal Dutch Shell plc Group pension funds and captive insurance companies and currently manages or advises on around USD 100 billion of assets for its clients. SAMCo is supervised by the Authority for the Financial Markets (AFM) and the Dutch Central Bank (DNB). The company is internationally oriented with clients in 10 different countries and approximately 160 employees. SAMCo’s objective is to provide high quality and cost-effective investment advice and asset management services to its clients. On behalf of its clients, SAMCo invests globally in fixed income, equities, and alternative investment categories such as private equity and other investment funds. Some investment management activities are also outsourced to external managers selected or recommended by SAMCo. Continuous change in financial markets and regulations as well as the diversity of SAMCo’s clients and the products they invest in, make it a professionally challenging environment to work in.

We are currently looking for a Head of AI & Quantitative Research . The Head of AI & Quant Research will report to the Chief Investment Officer. The position has two direct reports and will also manage work performed by external consultants and contractors. He/she will have a seat on the SAMCO investment committee and be part of front office leadership team. It is expected that AI and Quant Research will have a significant impact across the front office function which takes investment decisions. The target for the team will be to help generate significant added value each year.

What’s the role?

The Head of AI & Quantitative Research will supervise the department, responsibilities include:


Build a centre of expertise in the area of AI/ML with the objective to identity and help implement solutions that can improve SAMCo’s investment activities that have a significant dependency on models and data. In this capacity the team would be expected to
give advice on the use of alternative data sets;
identify suitable applications to perform analysis based on AI/ML; and
play a strong role in the definition of best-in-class processes for management around the suite of AI/ML models in use.
Help develop, in cooperation with SAMCo and Group IT, cloud-based platforms for both ad-hoc analysis as well as running complex analysis and models in the cloud on a recurring basis
Collaborate with investment departments (the lead being with investment depts) in the development of new model-based strategies, or review existing strategies, through seconding team members for a significant part of their time to those departments for specific projects or activities
Monitor the application of AI/ML techniques across the asset management industry with the aim to apply suitable applications in the tools used by SAMCo’s investment teams
Play an active role in the overall development of SAMCo’s strategy and with staff development as a member of the Front Office leadership team.


What we need from you


Hands-on team player with a degree in finance and/or math/physics/computing; 10 years of experience in financial markets/research roles, practical experience in applying AI and machine learning in financial markets, proven managerial experience.
Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills, in addition to the capacity to translate complex analyses into concise quantitative solutions.
An ability to convey opinions in a structured manner, combined with communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to lead a team of experienced professionals each responsible for their research activities and project work.
A good verbal and written command of the English language; ability to tailor your message to your audience and have good presentation skills.
Effective at building relationships and at influencing and negotiating in a challenging environment.
