Section 1: Position Summary
The Director of Business Intelligence (BI) will drive knowledge, expertise and thought leadership outwards into the organization supporting informed decision making, strategic planning and communications. This position will ensure the actionable intelligence delivered is valuable and contributes to successful outcomes; deliverables include quantitative and qualitative analytics, diagnostics, dashboards, reporting, KPIs and synthesized internal and external research. The Director of Business Intelligence also oversees expansion of business intelligence benefits by empowering business units to build their priority dashboards and investigate specific questions.
The Director will lead an enterprise approach to business intelligence, effective visualization, self-service, diagnostics, insight communication and standardized KPIs. This role is responsible for working across the data organization and business teams to drive solutioning, delivery, growth, and quality of analytics capabilities and tools. This role will actively contribute and manage a team of analysts ensuring prioritization, focus and exceptional delivery of the valuable insights that drive competitive advantage, advance operational excellence, and align with strategic objectives.
Section 2: Job Functions, Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning

Ability to craft a compelling business intelligence vision, and then carry it out in a well-developed strategy. This includes

Optimizing use of the BI platform and processes
Identify technology gaps and needs, present recommended solutions
Develop BI deliverable best practices
Develop, illustrate, maintain business intelligence roadmap
Collaborate across the organization to ensure BI roadmap and vision are clear and priorities align with team needs and business strategy
Assist in the development and expansion of an effective operating model for business intelligence that ensures consistency and promotes collaboration
Work successfully with data warehouse/management teams for effective data utilization, clear prioritization, quality assurance and ease of BI dissemination
Leadership
Project and workload management

Successfully execute business intelligence roadmap
Delegate and monitor work according to prioritization
Establish project artifacts to achieve value proposition and client expectations
Lead delivery of effective BI solutions, coaching on the pros and cons of different types of analytics, visualizations, storytelling highlighting the most valuable intelligence.
Provide mentorship on extrapolating and examining insights from large data sets supporting decisions on which BI solutions will enable the enterprise to achieve defined business goals.
Develop an extensive knowledge of Ascensus businesses, clients and the data available and effectively translate into business intelligence capabilities
Instill a practice of intellectual curiosity that ensures business need is understood so derived BI is on point, actionable and uncovers more than anticipated
Drive the adoption of self-service BI capabilities into our business units
Visualization / Storytelling
Build and deliver analytics findings in an effective manner that permeates enhanced knowledge into both day to day and strategic decisions and action.
Create deliverables from beginning to end (including design, data access & curation (SQL, Python etc), development (PowerBI etc) layout, and testing)
Ensure clear messaging and common understanding with BI that is consumable and easily accessible using BI and other available tools
Support Ascensus brand efforts identifying compelling and relevant insights for external publications and PR articles. Collaborate to complete and publish.
Diagnostics
Lead and support development and delivery of both KPIs to inform business success and project and process metrics on outcomes and results.
Utilize a variety of tools, data expertise and analytics methods to derive answers, observations and recommendations on priority business problems and opportunities
Drive standardization of both approach and tools to ensure a scalable business intelligence model for Ascensus
Knowledge Management
Develop and manage a repository of external and internal findings in critical business areas.
Leverage and establish industry benchmarks where appropriate.
Disseminate research updates summarizing major findings
Data Utilization
Validate that data sources meet requirements for the analytics effort and identify areas where augmentation is required to support business intelligence needs
Review data quality identifying improvements and solutions for data gaps
Advocate for data improvements and additions critical for BI deliverables and collaborate to define appropriate solutions

Responsible for protecting, securing, and proper handling of all confidential data held by Ascensus to ensure against unauthorized access, improper transmission, and/or unapproved disclosure of information that could result in harm to Ascensus or our clients.

Supervision
Management responsibilities including the following:

Manage team and deliverables
Responsible for the overall BI practice ensuring team members are effectively working and have the tools and technologies needed
Develop staff skills; encourage and reward areas of high aptitude and exceptional effort; coach on areas of improvement and identify
Support and provide feedback on development goals
Facilitate creativity, leadership, and communication within the team and as part of their projects.
Manage staff, supporting needs including education, setting clear goals and objectives, and leading by example.
Perform leadership tasks including performance reviews, time off and other administrative tasks
Section 3: Experience, Skills, Knowledge Requirements
Minimum 8-10 years of experience in Business Intelligence / Analytics disciplines
Post graduate degree preferred in Finance, Analytics, or related field
A minimum 5 years' experience with BI platforms such as Tableau, Power BI and SSRS; Ideally PowerBI
SQL Experience: 5 yrs creating SQL queries and optimize existing queries. Expert in windows functions, temp tables, and aggregate functions. Able to understand complex queries with many derived tables, calculations, and subqueries.
Experience leading a BI function that has delivered strong value to the business; proven success as a hands-on leader able to traverse a wide variety of responsibilities form coaching associates to strategic planning
Excellent analytical skills with demonstrated ability turning data into actionable insights
Strong project management skills and able to concurrently oversee portfolio of small enhancements to complex/large projects.
Excellent communication skills are critical
Able to effectively communicate and lead projects independently with the business and coordinate with vendors
Both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences
Effective at all levels of the organization with alignment on strategy and priorities.
Ability to contribute to a team environment across all levels with a high degree of professionalism
Ability to independently find solutions and pushes the team to do the same
Experimental mindset to drive innovation
Sound decision making and critical thinking skills
Solid organization and prioritization skills
Experience leading a team in either a technical or management capacity
Data expertise: significant understanding of data warehousing concepts including displayed experience or knowledge of data mart and data definition practices that support quality and re-use, with the ability to write complex SQL statements to store, retrieve, manipulate, integrate, validate, and summarize data
A team orientation: strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the ability to network with internal business partners across the organization
Solid business relationship experience with the ability to quickly learn about Ascensus products, services, clients, and business considerations. Ability to obtain valuable information and insight through dialog with SMEs.
Time Management/Prioritization - Ability to manage time and lead others to prioritize work to meet deadlines and deliver most valuable results first. Responsibility to manage own and other tasks as assigned along with resolving priority conflicts and collaborating to ensure common expectation understanding with clients.
Initiative/Work Ethic - Drives efforts to completion setting and managing personal goals. Proactively seeks out opportunities to ensure successful outcomes.
