The Vice President, Research is responsible for directing the functions of the Research Division within the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.ership (VEDP). This position provides leadership across an array of activities to provide relevant, accurate, and complete research findings, information, and analyses that are as actionable and predictive as possible. Core activities under the direction of the VP, Research include client communications (e.g., development of business cases, RFI responses, and proposal responses, as well as coordination of major project responses), project research support, maintaining the value proposition, supporting lead generation, geographic information systems, and Salesforce.
This full-time position reports to the Executive Vice President and has regular interaction with VEDP’s President & CEO, other division leaders and staff, and a variety of economic development partners and stakeholders across the Commonwealth. The position manages a division of approximately twenty professional, full-time staff members and one part-time support staff.
The VP, Research plays a key role in helping VEDP achieve a set of transformational goals outlined in its strategic plan, including reestablishing Virginia as one of the country’s economic leaders (i.e., achieving a growth rate among the top 5-10 states in the U.S.) and VEDP as one of America’s premier state economic development organizations.

Responsibilities
Provide overall leadership to Research activities aimed at assisting the Business Investment Division in the efficient and effective delivery of responsive client deliverables and other information necessary to justify and secure business investment and job creation decisions for Virginia.
Lead efforts to continually deepen and refine the information and knowledge behind Virginia’s value proposition in each of its target sectors (and future new industries).
Oversee the production of off-the-shelf and ad hoc content using the value proposition material to support VEDP’s business development and marketing efforts.
Lead research programs to maintain market trend awareness and identify new business opportunities to inform and direct VEDP's lead generation activities.
Oversee company research activities to support business development, lead generation and Administration needs.
Oversee research in support of VEDP’s Business Retention and Expansion Program and other business outreach efforts.
Ensure VEDP’s internal and external data resources – and underlying databases – are maintained up-to-date and in good working order for use by different stakeholder groups.
Provide oversight to the maintenance and development of the Sites & Buildings database in close cooperation with the Real Estate Solutions team.
Oversee Research Division activities in support of VEDP’s efforts to improve communications and services to the economic development partner community, including improving and updating content on VEDP’s website, developing new resources, etc.
Oversee the administration of the Salesforce system to support business processes and ensure positive user experiences across the organization.
Take a lead role in providing targeted, timely project management, research, and analytical support for select, high-impact initiatives identified by the VEDP Executive Leadership Team.
Lead research supporting community and economic development partner relations.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, statistics, public administration, or other related field. Master’s degree preferred, but not required.
Substantial direct experience in economic development research may be substituted for a directly relevant degree (although a bachelor’s degree is a minimum requirement).
Required experience, knowledge, and expertise
Ability to work constructively and effectively in a team environment by making positive contributions to the team’s operations, functions, and working relationships.
At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in business or economic development research.
Comprehensive knowledge of research techniques, economic analysis, regional strengths and weaknesses, regional and local product, and tax and incentive structures.
Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of the economic development process, as well as a solid understanding of economic theory.
Management of internal direct reports and indirect reports.
Division/department management, resource allocation, and project delegation.
Project leadership and management, working within external/internal cross-functional teams.
Oral and written communication expertise.
Operational performance management and reporting.
Support of organization-wide efforts.
Budget/contract preparation and administration.
Experience, knowledge, and expertise desired
At least two years of experience with a leading management consulting firm or other business organization with sophisticated capabilities in managing knowledge, producing actionable insights, and developing distinctive reports and presentations.
Advanced expertise in data visualization and presentation for both quantitative and qualitative content (e.g., development of customized charts and graphs, conciseness without loss of meaningful detail, alignment of data presentation with key messages).
Customized proposal development (e.g., aligning value proposition across multiple dimensions to a prospect’s unique needs/concerns in compelling and creative ways).
