AARP's Policy, Research and International Affairs department leads the development and communication of AARP's public policies and, research and insights on the issues that matter to people 50-plus. Reporting to the Director, Social Security and Savings, the Policy Advisor is responsible for developing and identifying public and private sector solutions for workers struggling to save for retirement and other financial challenges. This role supports a variety of Savings and Planning initiatives in developing partnerships, writing blogs and papers, and providing legislative and regulatory analysis that supports our advocacy and public outreach efforts. This role serves as a policy expert on a variety of financial planning efforts, including emergency savings, retirement savings, and other initiatives aimed at helping people manage their money and plan for their future.
Responsibilities
Identifies policy challenges and solutions in the public and private sector related to financial security, with a strong focus on savings, financial well-being, financial planning, and disparities.
Proactively identifies new initiatives and opportunities that contribute to the enterprise's thought leadership on its savings and financial planning agenda.
Uses appropriate methodologies and data to conduct and oversee original research on issues in AARP's areas of importance.
Provides objective policy analysis and expert guidance for timely use by key internal clients. Evaluates current policy positions and provides extensive input for the drafting of The Policy Book: AARP's Public Policies.
Develops policy options and reform strategies to enable AARP to promote changes in the public and private sectors that make it possible for 50 Americans to live better lives.
Critiques legislative and regulatory proposals in area of expertise, and provides objective policy analysis to inform AARP's public outreach and advocacy efforts.
Represents AARP in public forums and working groups, and serves as an expert resource to AARP staff, as well as to thought leaders and policy influencers outside AARP.
Serves as a key resource within AARP for issue expertise, participating in and influencing strategic planning and decision-making by contributing to Enterprise priorities, actively serving on committees, teams, and working groups.
Qualifications
Completion of an advanced degree in Public Policy, Economics, Finance, Statistics, Econometrics, other Social Science, or a related discipline.
Minimum of 8 years of experience related to the position.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills and exceptional skills presenting complex subject matter issues and data to all types of audiences, including the ability to develop policy-focused social media communications.
Demonstrated expert on financial security issues, such as retirement and non-retirement savings policy, financial well-being, financial planning, and application of behavioral finance.
Strong analytical skills and experience analyzing data, including through the application of statistical software preferred.
Ability to develop, build, and leverage internal and external relationships to achieve results.
Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)
AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Telework and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
