The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral body comprised of the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Legislature meets annually in the Capitol Building in Olympia beginning on the second Monday in January. Regular legislative sessions take place January through March in even-numbered years and January through April in odd-numbered years. Special legislative sessions occur as needed. Permanent staff work year-round supporting the Senate and its legislative members. The Senate strives to cultivate an inclusive working environment that supports diversity through equitable policies and practices.
Background
The Washington State Senate seeks a Financial Technician in the Accounting office. The ideal candidate will be skilled at detail-oriented work and open to learning new skills and processes. This position will ensure efficient, prompt, and accurate processing and distribution incoming documents and imaging process document flow for personnel and payroll staff. The Senate Accounting office has a strong customer service focus and this position will assist the office in providing a wide range of accounting services to elected Senate members and fellow employees of the Senate.
During the legislative session, the normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including holidays, and may require additional hours and days, depending on workload and office coverage. During the legislative interim, remote work and flexible work schedules are available.
This position is nonpartisan, full-time, and exempt from civil service.
Position Responsibilities
Assist with answering general questions over the phone and electronically.
Track and contact staff regarding payroll and personnel paperwork.
Use spreadsheets and word processing software to create and update documents and forms.
Navigate web-based applications to assist in various duties.
Duplicate and distribute materials such hiring packages, forms, paychecks, and paystubs.
File documents accurately, based upon established record keeping policies.
Compose and edit correspondence and documents.
Enter basic data for accounting and payroll activities into the state systems.
Review new hire paperwork.
Assist the Payroll Analyst with data entries.
Provide administrative support to other accounting staff.
Qualifications
Diverse backgrounds in education and experience could be successful in this role and will be considered. However, demonstrated qualifications or experience in the following may be best suited for the position:
At least one (1) year of general clerical or fiscal experience.
Ability to effectively interact with others who have diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, religious views, cultural backgrounds, socio-economic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, veteran status, and disability status to promote trust.
Demonstrated ability to work in a non-partisan capacity, supporting all members and staff regardless of party affiliation or position.
Be an effective and professional communicator with those who have different personalities and ways of processing information.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced office environment.
Strong organizational skills, able to prioritize multiple tasks while accommodating numerous interruptions.
Knowledge of software applications, notably MS Office suite: Word, Outlook, and Excel.
Ability to maintain professional confidentiality.
Salary Range and Employee Benefits
The salary range for this position is $44-77k, depending on experience and qualifications. The expected hiring salary, however, will typically be less than the top of the range.
